I had heard all these stories of pump and dumping. I am sorry, but pumping is a lot of work!! I don't want to waste that milk so I talked to several health professionals and got advice.
They say it is perfectly safe to have a glass (And by glass they mean a proper serving) of alcohol in moderation while breastfeeding without pumping and dumping. Ideally, you would feed your little one first, enjoy the beverage, and feed a few hours later. You see, alcohol runs in your blood stream. Blood is used to help in milk production but isn't actually in the milk itself. My doctor stated that if you compared a glass of wine to a glass of orange juice, baby would get more sugars and harm from the one glass orange juice than the wine. She stated that the only reason to pump and dump would be if I went on some huge drinking binge (which I don't do) and was intoxicated and felt engorged to the point of needing to pump. The real harm with drinking as a mom is being drunk and harming your child by not having the capacity to care for them properly, or in the case of co-sleeping, passing out and not realizing if you were too close to baby.
So in summary - I have enjoyed a beverage now and then. Mainly, on my 30th birthday. I fed Julianne, and then had a lovely mimosa before heading to the spa for 2 hours thanks to my mom's thoughtful gift and my husband taking care of baby girl. Alcohol is not a large part of our lives, but as I know this is a concern for some new moms (I just went 9 months not drinking, I don't want to not drink wine for another x months because of breastfeeding) I thought I would share the above.
